READING Pa. - The Albright football team (0-9, 0-7 MAC Commonwealth) fell at home on Senior Day to Alvernia (3-6, 2-5 MAC Commonwealth) by a final score of 21-14. On an unseasonably warm November day the Lions and Golden Wolves were locked up in a tight one. The game was tied 7-7 at the half before Alvernia scored twice in the third quarter to pull away and win the game.
Prior to the start of Saturday's game, the Albright football program honored their 19 seniors for all their hard work and dedication throughout the years to the program. The graduating seniors are Daniel Vital, Antwan Rogers Jr., Lucas Roselli, Sam Viera, Ryan Rapp, Omar Sesay, Quincy Clark, Cameron Thomas, Gabe Kuehn, Jeff Joseph, Eddie Harkins, Joshua Alexander, Jakob Banks, Christian Jusino, John Leighty, Sidney Walker, Daniel Lewis, Tysen Spriggs and Michael Starkey.Â
Alvernia won the toss and deferred to Albright. Michael Starkey started at quarterback and led the Lions on an opening 14 play touchdown drive. Dahlia Adams capped off the scoring drive taking the direct snap and forcing his way in for the score. The opening drive took off half of the play clock in the opening quarter.
Alvernia tied the game up with 8:20 left to go in the half by way of a 46 yard pass from Monte McMorris to Neeko Scurlock.
Albright would once again start the half with the ball after Alvernia fumbled the second half kickoff. Samuel Moratori recovered the ball for the Lions and set the offense up in great field position.
The Albright offense was able to capitalize on the Alvernia mistake. Starkey tiptoed down the far sideline for a 14-yard rushing touchdown. The score put the Lions in front 14-7.
The Golden Wolves were able to make up for their special teams mistake finding the endzone twice in the third and taking the lead 21-14.
Albright looked poised to tie things back up when John Leighty hauled in a 42 yard reception in the fourth quarter putting the Lions in opposing territory. However it was not meant to be as the Alvernia defense stood tall, stalling out the Albright possession and ultimately winning the game.
Starkey finished with 88 yards through the air and 14 more on the ground in his first start at quarterback this season. Quincy Clark totaled 67 yards on 4.5 yards per carry to led the rushing attack for Albright.
Defensive stalwarts Sam Viera and Daniel Vital once again led the way for the Albright defense. Viera finished with 14 tackles and Vital finished with eight tackles. With a strong performance next week against LVC, Viera will own the career tackle record for Albright Football.
Ryan Rapp added another sack to his name for his 11th of the year. The senior defensive end will need one more sack next week against LVC to claim the single season sack record in Albright football history.Â
