MADISON, N.J. – The Albright men's lacrosse team dropped their season opener at Drew on Saturday with a 17-9 non-conference loss.
With the loss, the Lions open their season 0-1 while the Rangers open their season 1-0.
In his collegiate debut, first-year
Jack Burke totaled a big six points behind four goals and two assists. Sophomore
Jon Alvarez also posted his first career hat trick to lead the Lions.
Drew took an early 2-0 lead after netting back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of action. Alvarez got the Lions on the board at the 10:24 mark and Burke followed with a goal at 7:32 to tie up the game.
The Rangers took the 3-2 lead with the opening goal of the second stanza on a successful man up opportunity. Burke tied the game back up at three with his second goal at the 8:18-mark. The two teams traded goals as first-year
Ryan Houghtaling recorded his first collegiate goal at the 7:37-mark to tie the game once more at four. Drew netted the final goal of the first half to hold a 5-4 lead entering the break.
Drew came out of the half firing away, netting three-straight goals in the first three minutes to take an 8-4 lead. Alvarez and Burke snapped the run with back-to-back goals to cut their deficit to two at the 9:35-mark. The Rangers responded with two more to pull ahead 10-6 with 7:04 left in the third. Alvarez found the back of the net once more at the 4:53-mark to keep the Lions within reach, but Drew tallied a last second goal to hold an 11-7 lead entering the final quarter.
The Rangers took a five-goal lead within the first minute of the fourth quarter. Senior
Alex McKendry found the back of the net behind a feed from Burke on a man up opportunity to bring the score to 12-8. However, Drew began to run away with the game tallying five-straight goals to take a 17-8 lead. Burke netted one more in the final minutes of action, but the Rangers claimed the 17-9 victory as the final buzzer went off.
Drew held a 58-30 shot advantage and connected 35 on goal compared to Albright's 20. The Rangers also won the battle for ground balls 34-23 and faceoffs 22-7. Junior goalkeeper
Ethan Hinman receives the loss for the Lions after starting and completing seven saves in 30 minutes of action. Jeremy Gottlieb earns the win for the Rangers with 11 saves in the full amount of action.
Albright will open up their home schedule at Shirk Stadium on Saturday against Manhattanville at 1 p.m.
