Women's Hoops Outlasted by York in Tightly Contested Battle, 57-54

READING, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team took York down to the wire but dropped an unfortunate 57-54 MAC Commonwealth matchup in the Bollman Center on Tuesday.

With the loss, the Lions drop to 7-8 in conference and 12-9 overall. Meanwhile, the Spartans advance to 12-3 in conference and 18-5 overall.

Senior Gabby Boggs led all scorers with 14 points on 5-for-13 shooting and added nine rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Senior Brady Wassel tallied another double-double with ten points behind 4-for-14 shooting and a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Amina Rauf notched 12 points on 4-for-11 shooting from the floor.

It was a back-and forth battle to open the game with the lead changing three times until York grasped an 11-7 lead. Rauf knocked down a three to get Albright within one, but five-straight points for the Spartans kept them in front 16-10 at the 3:22-mark. An and-one from senior Abby Gaffney and another three from Rauf tied the game up at 16 at the end of the first. The Lions kept their momentum and opened the second stanza on a 9-2 run capped by an and-one from first-year Mackenzie Dover to take a 25-18 lead. The Spartans closed out the half with nine unanswered points to take a 27-25 lead entering the break.

Albright came out of the half with fresh legs as they went on a 12-4 run capped by a Dover bucket to put them back in front 37-31 at the 4:23-mark. The Spartans responded with an 8-2 run to tie the game up at 39. A basket from sophomore Frances Glover-Bey and an and-one from Wassel gave the Lions a five-point lead, but York knocked down the final three of the quarter to cut their deficit to 44-42 at the end of the third. Albright used a 6-2 advantage to open the final stanza and keep their lead. York began to heat up with a 9-2 run capped by a three-pointer that allowed them to take back the lead at 53-53 with 2:44 remaining. Dover knocked down a huge basket to put Albright back in front by one with under a minute left to play. However, the Lions sent York to the free-throw line where they went 2-for-2 to give them a 55-54 lead with under 12 seconds remaining. Albright was unable to get another quality shot off and sent the Spartans to the charity strip once more where they sealed their victory with a pair of free-throws to claim the 57-54 victory.

Albright shot 21-for-58 (36.2%) from the field, 5-for-20 (25%) from beyond the arc, and 7-for-10 (70%) from the charity stripe. The Lions won the battle on the glass 40-31, tallied 15 second chance points, and 26 points in the paint. Meanwhile, York shot 19-for-52 (36.5%) from the floor, 3-for-15 (20%) from three-point range, and 16-for-18 (88.9%) from the free-throw line. The Spartans converted 14 points off turnovers and gathered 28 points in the paint.

The Lions will close out the regular season on Saturday as they travel to Stevenson at 1 p.m.
