Softball Stumbles at Fastpitch Dreams Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Albright softball team dropped two contests to Wilson and Keene State in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Wednesday. The Lions third game against Sarah Lawrence was canceled due to rain.
 
With the losses, Albright drops to 0-6 overall. Meanwhile, Wilson improves to 3-3-1 and Keene State remains undefeated at 6-0.
 
Wilson 11, Albright 3 (6 inn.)
Albright opened up the rainy day with an 11-3 loss to Wilson in game one. The Lions opened up the scoring in the top of the second sparked by Brooke Franklin who singled to right field to get on base. Massiel Del Orbe smashed a triple to right field to bring home Franklin and put Albright up 1-0. Veronica Heckman singled to center field as Del Orbe circled home as the Lions extended their lead to two. Wilson responded in the bottom of the second with three runs behind four hits and two errors to pull ahead 3-2. Albright tied the game at three in the top of the third as Allison Melahn reached first on an error to lead off. Melahn stole second and then advanced to third as Jadelyn Van Winkle singled to left field. Kaitlyn Chell then reached base on an error as Melahn came home for an unearned run, tying the game up at three.
 
Wilson pulled ahead in the bottom of the fourth as they posted three runs on four hits and one error. The Phoenix defense stood tall in the top of the fifth to keep the Lions from earning any runs. Wilson continued to control the game posting a big four runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 10-3 advantage. The Phoenix notched one more run in the bottom of the sixth to claim the 11-3 victory.
 
Keene State 9, Albright 1 (6 inn.)
Albright suffered a 9-1 setback to Keene State in game two on Wednesday. The Owls got on the board in the top of the first fueled by an early triple to take a 1-0 lead. The Lions tied the game at one in the bottom of the second as Chell doubled to left field to lead off. She then moved to third on a ground out and circled home on a passed ball to get Albright on the board. Keene State jumped back in front in the top of the third with a double to take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Owls claimed a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth with two runs behind three hits. Keene State then closed out the game in the top of the sixth with a commanding five runs on three hits and two errors to grasp the 9-1 victory.
 
Van Winkle receives the loss for both contests and falls to 0-4 on the season after 4.0 innings pitched against Wilson and 4.0 against Keene State.
 
Albright returns to action today to conclude their Spring Break trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C. against the University of Saint Joseph at 9:30 a.m. and Muhlenberg at 1:30 p.m.
