Baseball Falls to Muhlenberg in Home Opener Doubleheader

READING, Pa. – The Albright baseball team was swept in their doubleheader home opener against Muhlenberg at Kelchner Field on Saturday, despite a strong second-game performance.
 
With the loss, Albright drops to 0-4 overall. Meanwhile, Muhlenberg remains undefeated and improves to 5-0.
 
GAME ONE
Muhlenberg took control of the game early, scoring five runs on four hits in the top of the first capped off with a big home run that brought three Mules home. Albright's defense stood tall in the second inning, earning three-straight outs, but Muhlenberg tallied four runs in the top of the third on two hits to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The Lions struggled to score as Muhlenberg closed out game one with four runs in the top of the seventh on two hits. Albright finally got on the board in the final half of the seventh inning. Will Algard singled to lead off and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chris Thomas singled and earned the lone RBI for the Lions in the first game as Algard ran home. Muhlenberg claimed a dominant 13-1 victory in game one.
 
GAME TWO
Albright was defeated 8-3 in game two, despite their strong efforts. The Lions batted well in the bottom of the fourth to open up the scoring. Eddie Meredith led off with a double and advanced to third after Nick Sklenarik grounded out to the pitcher. Dylan Harlos slammed a big homer to earn two runs for the Lions to give them the lead. Albright kept Muhlenberg scoreless throughout the top of the fifth and earned one more in the bottom half. Roman Berretta singled to lead off then successfully stole second. Ethan Karel singled to get on base and Jack Gilmer followed with a sacrificial bunt to put Berretta and Karel on third and second. Eddie Meredith doubled to send Berretta home, earning an RBI and putting Albright ahead 3-0.
 
Muhlenberg got on the board in the top of the sixth earning four runs on four hits, fueled by a triple that brought home two Mules. The Lions got two players on base in the sixth, but were unable to tally a run. Muhlenberg capped off their scoring with four more runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to take an 8-3 lead. Meredith got on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Albright was unable to make a play of it as the Mules claimed the 8-3 victory in game two.
 
Gavin Budzyn receives the loss for game one to fall to 0-2. Dan Stofko received the loss in game two to open the season 0-1. Quinn Rovner advances to 2-0 as he earns the win for Muhlenberg in game one. Meanwhile, Brendan Hughes opens the season 1-0 after earning the game two win while Will Nomura receives the save.
 
Albright will return to action tomorrow as they travel to Scranton for a non-conference game at 1 p.m.
