READING, Pa. – The Albright baseball team closed out their MAC Commonwealth series against Alvernia with a 20-2 defeat at Kelchner Field on Friday.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 1-18 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves improve to 8-14-1 and 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth action.
Alvernia grasped a quick 6-0 lead in the top of the first behind six hits and one error. The Golden Wolves extended their lead to 15 behind three runs in the top of the third and another six in the fifth. Albright finally snapped the run and got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth as
Chris Thomas singled to lead off. Thomas then moved to second on a ground out.
Roman Berretta brought Thomas home with a triple, bringing the score to 15-1.
The Golden Wolves weren't silenced for long as they answered in the top of the sixth with four runs on four hits to claim a commanding 19-1 advantage. The Lions were only able to add one more run in the bottom half of the eighth behind two hits from
Nick Sklenarik and
Billy Bean. Alvernia closed out the game with one final run on three hits in the top of the ninth to claim the 20-2 victory and series sweep over the Lions.
Dan Stofko (1-4) receives the loss for Albright behind 4.1 innings pitched and 27 batters faced. Jack Cossa (3-2) earns the win for Alvernia after facing 33 batters in 8.0 innings. Berretta and Bean led Albright with two hits each on the afternoon.
The Lions return to action tomorrow as they travel to Moravian for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
