READING, Pa. – The Albright baseball team was unable to hold onto an early lead as local non-conference rival Penn State Berks rallied to claim a 7-5 win on Monday.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-25 overall while the Nittany Lions improve to 10-13.
Albright got on the board early in the top of the first as
Billy Bean walked and stole second.
Dylan Harlos then doubled to right field to bring Bean home and open up the scoring. Penn State Berks then tied the game at one in the bottom half of the second with one run behind one hit.
The Lions jumped back in front in the top of the third as Bean walked and stole second again to lead off.
Reece Adam then singled to move Bean to third. Bean then stole home to give Albright a 2-1 lead. The Lions then built on their lead in the top of the fifth when Bean, Harlos, and Adam loaded the bases.
Josh Halye then sent Bean home once again as Albright pulled ahead 3-1. In the top of the sixth,
Hayden Paukstis led off with a double to left center field. Paukstis then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Trey Smith and rounded home on a wild pitch to extend the Lions lead to 4-1.
Penn State Berks responded in the bottom half of the sixth with four runs behind four hits and one error to grasp their first lead of the game at 5-4. Albright tied the game back up in the top half of the seventh as Bean walked and stole second once again. Harlos then reached base on an error and moved Bean to third. Bean circled home once again on a sacrificial fly out by Adam to tie the game at five. The Nittany Lions pulled in front once more in the bottom of the seventh with two runs behind three hits to grasp a 7-5 lead. Penn State Berks held Albright scoreless throughout the final two frames to claim the non-conference victory.
Jeremy Brubaker started on the pitching mound for the Lions and threw five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Gavin Budzyn (0-4) receives the loss for the Lions behind 1.0 innings pitched and one strikeout. Bean notched four runs for Albright while Harlos Adam and Halye each added an RBI.
The Lions will return to action on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. as they travel to Cairn for non-conference action.
