LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Albright baseball team suffered a 17-5 non-conference setback at Cairn on Thursday. Following a rain delay, the contest was cut short after five innings due to darkness.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 1-26 overall. Meanwhile, the Highlanders improve to 15-11 overall.
Albright opened the top of the first as
Nick Sklenarik,
Roman Berretta, and
Dylan Harlos loaded the bases out of the gates.
Chris Thomas hit a sacrificial fly that brought home Sklenarik to open up the scoring.
John O'Connor then walked as the Lions kept the bases loaded.
Eddie Meredith then walked as Berretta came home to give Albright an early 2-0 lead.
The Lions added to their lead in the top of the third as Harlos walked to lead off, stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Will Algard brought Harlos home with a single to right field. O'Connor then singled and advanced to second on the throw as Algard moved to third. Meredith brought home Harlos on a sacrifice fly, while
Jack Gilmer singled to bring home O'Connor and extend Albright's lead to 5-0.
Cairn finally found their footing in the bottom half of the third as they scored four runs on three hits to cut their deficit to 5-4. The Highlanders kept their momentum with another strong inning in the bottom of the fourth, tallying seven runs behind five hits to grasp an 11-5 advantage. Cairn capped off their scoring with six unanswered runs behind three hits in the bottom of the fifth, solidifying their 17-5 victory as the game was called early due to darkness.
Dante Mack (0-2) receives the loss for the Lions 3.0 innings pitched and 19 batters faced. Meredith led the Lions offense with one hit and two RBIs.
Albright will return to Kelchner Field on Saturday as they host Lebanon Valley in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at 12 p.m.
