Reading, PA - The Albright Lions Field Hockey team picked up their first win of the season, and of the Coach Co era, as they defeated nationally ranked Ursinus College by a score of 3-0. The Lions are now 1-4 on the season, while the Bears drop to 1-3. The Bears entered the game ranked 17th in the country.
After a scoreless first quarter, which saw each team take two shots, the Lions would open the scoring late in the second quarter. Leading scorer
Chelsea Johnson put away a pass from
Olivia Lorah to put the Lions up 1-0. That is how the score would stay heading into halftime. The Lions held a slight 7-6 shot advantage in the first half, as well as a 5-3 penalty corner advantage. All five of Albright's first half penalty corners came in the second quarter.
A key moment in the game happened with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter. The referee awarded the Lions a penalty stroke. SophomoreÂ
Lamya Mejias stepped up to take it, and buried it, giving the Lions a little bit of breathing room.
Less than a minute into the fourth quarter a scramble occurred in front of the Ursinus net, and resulted in a
Megan Keller goal, assisted by
Shannon Griffin, this gave the Lions the insurance they were looking for, and put them up 3-0.
The Bears went on a full throttle offensive attack in the fourth quarter, desperate to score. They would take six penalty corners, and six shots, but nothing got by goalie
Veronica Heckman. She stopped all 10 shots she faced in the game.
After the clock hit 0:00 the Lions players ran onto the field to celebrate their first win of the season. After returning to the sideline, they doused Coach Catherine Wiese (Ostoich) with water, celebrating the coach's first win at Albright.
Coach Wiese said afterwards, "I am really proud of how the team played today. We have talked about playing as a team from start to finish, and tonight we finally did that. I thought so many people stepped up tonight, and we could really see the team having each other's backs. I also have to give a huge shoutout to our keeper V, she had an incredible game. She came up with some massive saves , and the team fed off of her play. It was awesome to watch."
Up Next -Â The Lions will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday, September 17th, as they open up conference play at Widener University. That game will start at 2pm
