READING, Pa. - The Albright field hockey team (6-7, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) went on the road on Saturday night squaring off against cross town rival Alvernia (5-8, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth). The Lions picked up their first win over Alvernia since the 2015 season beating the Golden Wolves 2-1 in tonight's game.
Head coach
Catherine Wiese (Ostoich) on her team's tremendous performance this evening "I am really proud of the way this team came out and played hard right from the first whistle. We put together some really nice plays that lead to two beautiful early goals. We knew they were going to come out strong in the second half but we did a good job as a team to hold them off. It was a great win for this team and this program!"
Tonight's win is the first over Alvernia since the 2015 season and the first time Albright has scored two goals in a game vs Alvernia since the 2015 season.
The Lions remain perfect this week going 2-0 picking up two huge wins in MAC Commonwealth play. On Wednesday (Oct. 11) of this past week, Albright beat Widener 1-0.
Chelsea Johnson got things rolling for the Lions scoring twice in the opening period. Johnson's two goals came within three minutes of each other and were both assisted by
Keliah Santiago. Santiago's two assists marks the second game this season where Santiago recorded two assists in the same game.
Johnson's two first half goals were good for her 9th and 10th goals of the season. With the two first period goals, Johnson now has back to back seasons with double digit goals scored.
Albright led 2-0 after 30 minutes of play doubling up Alvernia.
Veronica Heckman faced two first half shots from Alvernia and handled both of them finishing the half with two saves.
Alvernia cut their deficit in half early in the fourth period to make a 2-1 Albright lead.
Alvernia's goal came with 13 minutes to go in the fourth period and since that moment, the Lions defense did not let up a shot by the Golden Wolves. The stifling defense carried out the rest of the game for Albright leaving Alvernia with a 2-1 victory.
Heckman finished the game with five saves in another strong performance for the Albright goalkeeper. Heckman now has seven games this season making at least five saves in a single game.
Johnson finished with two shots making both of which count while Santiago and
Lamya Mejias each added one shot.
