READING, Pa. - The Albright field hockey team (7-8, 3-2 MAC Commonwealth) picked up an important Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth victory on Saturday (Oct. 21) afternoon beating Hood College (9-7, 0-5 MAC Commonwealth) 3-0.
Prior to today's game, the Albright field hockey team took the time to honor their graduating seniors. The graduating seniors are
Shannon Griffin,
Veronica Heckman,
Laurel Gingrich,
Olivia Moyer and
Morgan Kopcik.
The Lions 3-0 victory today puts them one step closer to clinching back to back Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth playoff berths. The Lions conference record of 3-2 puts them in good position heading into the final week of the regular season.
Coach Co was thrilled with her team's performance this afternoon, "I am really proud of the way the team came together and got a win on senior day. These seniors have done so much for this team and this program, so I am really happy that they can remember this day with a win. It was great to see the team really start to play some good attacking hockey towards the end of the game. We finally scored on some corners today so that was a great boost of confidence. Lastly, our defense did a good job to keep the ball out of the circle for the majority of the game. It is always nice to get a shutout with a win!"
The Albright defense was stellar all day long holding Hood College to one shot in the entire game.
Veronica Heckman was credited with her fifth shutout of the season. The Lions scored once in the first period, once in the third period and once in the fourth and final period.
The first goal of the day came from
Laurel Gingrich, just four minutes into the game. Gingrich collected the ball after an initial Hood save and deposited the ball into the back of the net.
Chelsea Johnson got the second Albright goal just after halftime off of a penalty corner. Johnson's 11th goal of the season doubled the Albright lead.
McKena Cox scored the third and final goal of the day to secure the victory over Hood. Cox's goal was the first of her career and was assisted by
Olivia Lorah.
As a team, Albright out shot Hood College 17-1 and had 12 penalty corners to just Hood College's one.
