READING, PA. – The Albright women's basketball team (2-1) played host to Moravian University (0-3) on Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon in the Lions home opener. The two teams have squared off in every season since 2009 with the Lions taking the 2023 installment by a final score of 62-53.
Albright came out firing in the first quarter shooting 50% from the field taking a 26-11 lead into the second quarter.
The Lions jumped out to a big first quarter lead thanks to seven points from
Mackenzie Dover and five first quarter points from
Kenedy Cooper. The duo combined to shoot 4-7 from the field for 12 of the Lions 26 first quarter points.
Moravian looked to climb back in the game during the second period but Albright kept them at bay taking a 39-26 lead into halftime.
Julia Zakovitch paced all Albright scorers with 10 first half points.
The third quarter was low scoring thanks to strong defensive play from Albright. The Lions held the Greyhounds to 1-10 shooting from the field. Heading to the fourth quarter the Lions led 47-35 looking to close out the game.
Moravian cut the deficit to only seven making it a 54-47 game with just over a minute remaining in the game. That would be the closest the visitors would come as the Lions closed out their home opener winning 62-53.
Dover finished with a game high 18 points while adding eight rebounds and five assists. Dover has picked up right where she left off last off season continuing to lead the Albright offense.
Zakovitch and
Orianna Edmond. Zakovitch scored a career high 13 points while Edmond finished with 11 points. For Edmond it marks her second straight game recording a double-double including hauling in 11 rebounds.
Albright did a fantastic job of getting to the line this afternoon going 18-21 from the stripe catapulting them to victory.
