Women’s Basketball Edged Out by Neumann University 66-64

The Albright women’s basketball team was in action on Saturday (Dec. 9) on the road against Neumann University. Albright dropped the competitive game to Neumann 66-64.

NEUMANN, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team (3-5) suffered a narrow defeat on Saturday (Dec. 9) afternoon at the hands of Neumann University (9-3). The game was tightly contested throughout but the Knights were able to edge out the Lions in the end winning 66-64.

Albright and Neumann were tied after 20 minutes of play at 29-29. The Lions held a six-point lead after the first quarter thanks to seven first quarter points from Mackenzie Dover. Including Dover, five Lions scored at least two points in the opening frame in a balanced offensive attack.

Neumann shot 81.8% from the field in the second quarter to climb back into the game tying Albright at the half.

The entire game was closely contested throughout as the second half featured strong play from both teams. In the entirety of the second half, neither team led by more than five points. Albright led by two at 46-44 after 30 minutes courtesy of a Julia Zakovitch layup in the final minute of the third quarter.

Albright found themselves down 66-64 with 30 seconds to go after an Orianna Edmond jumper cut the Lions deficit in half. Albright forced a turnover on the next Neumann possession getting the ball back with four seconds left. The Lions bid at sending the game to overtime fell just short as Neumann escaped with a narrow victory over Albright.

Despite the loss, Dover once again filled up the stat sheet for Alright. Dover finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals. The six steals tie a career high for the dynamic junior guard.

Gigi Serrano had one of her best games as an Albright Lion going for a team game high of 16 points shooting 58.7% from the floor. The 16 points marks a new career high for Serrano now having two games this season scoring in double figures.

Zakovitch and Edmond rounded out the Lions in double figures going for 12 and 10 points, respectively. Zakovitch nearly notched a double-double hauling in eight total rebounds, five of which were offensive.

Albright will have the upcoming week off for finals and will return to play next Saturday, December 16 at Immaculata. The game is set for a 1 p.m. tip-off against the Mighty Macs.
