Burke’s Game Winner sends Men’s lacrosse past Gwynedd Mercy

The Albright men’s lacrosse team was in action this afternoon and picked up their first win of the season courtesy of a Jack Burke game winning goal with under a minute to play winning the game 16-15.

READING, Pa. - The Albright men's lacrosse team (1-2) was in action today on a cold and rainy day and took care of business at home on Jack Burke's game winning goal with under a minute to play downing Gwynedd Mercy (0-1) by a final score of 16-15.

The game looked to be heading to overtime all knotted at 15 all with under a minute to play. However Jack Burke had other ideas. With under a minute to play Burke beat his defender with a dazzling move and then fired one past the Gwynedd Mercy goalie sending the Lions home with a win.

Jay Shifflet got things rolling for the Lions scoring the game's first two goals both assisted by Burke. Shifflet put together a first half hat trick to pull the Lions within one after the first 15 minutes of play.

It was all Lions in the second quarter scoring seven goals to the Griffins one. Shifflet was a man on a mission scoring another three goals in the period. Burke added two goals in the period while Nick Antonio and Luke Williams each added a goal of their own. The Lions led 11-6 at the break.

The Griffins fought back in the third period, tying the game up at 13 apiece heading into the final frame. Shifflet scored another two goals in the period keeping the Lions in the game.

In the fourth, the defense intensity ramped up for both teams seeing only five total goals scored in the final frame. Lucas Roselli and Luke Williams each scored early on to give the Lions a two goal lead. The Griffins tied it up with three and changed to go.

Burke buried the game winner with 43 seconds left to send home the Lions on their way with a victory.

Shifflet scored a career high eight goals in the contest just one shy of the school record.

Burke tallied four goals of his own and assisted on four Albright goals. Luke Williams added two goals of his own on the day.
