Women’s Basketball Roars Back to take Down Alvernia

The Albright women’s basketball team trailed by as many as 14 in the game but roared all the way back and pulled off the comeback protecting home floor Alvernia, 57-56.

READING, Pa. - The Albright College women's basketball team (15-7, 8-4 MAC Commonwealth) was in action this afternoon and roared all the way back to complete the comeback over cross town rival Alvernia University (14-8, 9-4 MAC Commonwealth) by a final score of 57-56.

The win today does a multitude of good for the Lions in MAC Commonwealth standings. The Lions have all but clinched a MAC Commonwealth playoff berth and now have their sights set on hosting the first round of playoffs.

In addition to the comeback victory, Gabby Boggs added another milestone to her resume becoming Albright's leading shot blocker in school history during today's game. Boggs now has 239 career blocks and counting in her illustrious Albright career.

In front of a contingent of Albright faithful the Lions and Golden Wolves from Alvernia played an evenly matched first quarter before Alvernia took a slim five point advantage heading into the second frame.

Three quick Alvernia buckets to start the second quarter forced Albright into an early timeout. Heading into halftime the Lions went on a quick four point spurt to cut their deficit to only 10 points at the break. The four point spurt started the comeback for the Lions.

Boggs was strong for Albright in the first 20 minutes scoring seven points and bringing down seven rebounds.

Albright came out of halftime firing on all cylinders playing tremendously on both ends of the floor. In the third quarter, Albright was flying around the court making life miserable on the visitors. The Lions outscored Alvernia, 17-8 in the quarter and cut their deficit to one heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter brought out the best in both teams going shot for shot in the frame. We pick up with a minute and fifty seconds left and the Lions trailing by one. Boggs delivered what ended up being the game winning shot courtesy of a beautiful pass from Amina Rauf.

With 10 seconds to go and Albright leading by one, Taliyah Malone drove the lane and was promptly turned away by Boggs blocking the go ahead Alvernia attempt giving Albright the victory on their home floor.

Rauf scored a game high 19 points and added four steals and four assists for the Senior Guard. Boggs tallied 11 points, brought down nine rebounds, dished out six assists and blocked three shots.

Julia Zakovitch once again provided a spark off the bench for Albright adding eight points and three rebounds.
