Women’s Basketball Downs Hood on the Road 50-48

The Albright women’s basketball team returned to the court on Wednesday (Jan. 31) night playing on the road against Hood College. The Lions won tonight’s game over the Blazers 50-48.

FREDERICK, Md. – The Albright College women's basketball team (8-12, 5-4 MAC Commonwealth) returned to action on the road against Hood College (3-16, 2-7 MAC Commonwealth) on Wednesday (Jan. 31) evening. Albright won tonight 50-48 and have swept the season series against the Blazers.

With tonight's win, the Lions move back to one game over .500 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Lions have yet to lose to the Blazers in their program's history running the winning streak to 22 games dating back to December of 1999.

Julia Zakovitch poured in a new career high tonight going for 18 points. Zakovitch had 10 points at halftime to pace the Albright offense in the early going. Tonight's game is the 11th this season where Zakovitch has scored at least 10 points in a game. The sophomore forward added seven rebounds (six offensive) while playing all 40 minutes of tonight's game.

The difference in tonight's game came at the free throw line. Albright attempted 21 free throws to just eight attempts from Hood. The Lions made 13 of their free throws led by Zakovitch going 8-11 from the charity stripe.

Albright led 16-9 after the first 10 minutes and went into halftime wining by the same margin of seven points leading 28-21. CJ Apistar scored five first half point and Mackenzie Dover had four points in the first half.

Picking up in the fourth quarter with the Lions leading by two at 47-45 with 50 seconds left to play. After a Hood made basket to cut their deficit to two points, Zakovitch calmly hit two free throws to put the Lions back up four with 23 seconds left on the game clock. Hood made a three pointer with five seconds left putting themselves down one at 49-48.

Julia Parmelee was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit one of two free throws to go up 50-48. Parmelee missed the second free throw but that proved to be good for the Lions as Hood was not able to get a game winning shot off thanks to no time left on the clock.

Apistar chipped in with seven points including a made three-pointer. Orianna Edmond and Kenedy Cooper each scored six points in tonight's ball game.

Dover finished her night with five points while adding eight rebounds and four assists.

Albright held Hood to 32.1% shooting from the floor and just 25% from three. Albright outpaced the Blazers scoring 11 fast break points to Hood's three and dominated in the paint scoring 24 points to Hood's 18.
