READING, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team (3-10, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth) opened up their Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth road portion of the schedule on Saturday (Jan. 6) against Alvernia (9-4, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth). The Golden Wolves won today's game 80-62 over the Lions.
Today's meeting is the first between the two sides since last year's MAC Commonwealth semifinals. Prior to today's game, the two sides have been evenly matched each winning three of their last six meetings since March of '21.
Julia Zakovitch and
Orianna Edmond each had strong first halves for the Lions. Zakovitch scored 10 first half points to go along with five rebounds. Edmond poured in eight points and hauled in six rebounds on her way to a double-double.
Alvernia led 39-25 at halftime. The Golden Wolves shot 52.9% from the field in the second quarter alone stretching their lead to 14 at the break.
Shakyla Mayo scored all 13 of her points this afternoon in the second half. The first-year guard ended the game going 2-2 from beyond the three-point line while shooting 66% from the field. The 13 points marks a new career high for Mayo.
In the end the Alvernia offense was too much to overcome for Albright. The Golden Wolves are now 1-1 in MAC Commonwealth play with today's win.
Albright placed four different scorers in double figures this afternoon led by Mayo's 13. Zakovitch finished with 12, Edmond with 11 and
Gigi Serrano scored 10.
Zakovitch has scored in double figures in five of her last six games and flirted with a double-double this afternoon finishing the game with eight rebounds.
Edmond collected her third double-double of the season finishing with 11 boards, five of which were offensive.
For Serrano, today's game marks the fifth time this season Serrano has scored 10 or more points in a game.

The women's basketball team will return home for their next MAC Commonwealth contest squaring off against Hood College at home. The game will take place on Wednesday, January 10 beginning at 6:00 p.m. from the Bollman Center.
