FREDERICK, Md. – The Albright volleyball team (17-7, 2-5 MAC Commonwealth) picked up their 17
th win of the season on Wednesday evening with a 3-2 win over Hood College (9-18, 1-6 MAC Commonwealth). The Lions have now won 17 games in a season for the first time since 2003 when Albright won 18 games.
Tonight's win gives the Lions two MAC Commonwealth wins on the season. The 2024 team is the first to achieve two conference wins in a season since the 2016 team.
Albright found themselves down two sets to one after three competitive sets to begin the match. The Lions forced a fifth set by taking the fourth set 25-21.
In the fifth set, Hood would score the sets first three points taking an early lead. Albright would regroup and go on to win 15 of the next 21 points in the set to win the match. The win moved Albright to a perfect 4-0 in five set matches this season.
Neve Straff led the team tonight in kills and service aces going for 12 kills and six aces. Straff's sixth and final ace of the match was the game winner for Albright coming in the fifth set. Straff added 12 digs for good measure.
Sophie Hampton turned in an all-around solid effort going for double digit kills and digs. Hampton had 11 kills marking the 10
th match this season with double-digit kills. The senior Lion added 21 digs in her second 20-plus dig effort of the season.
Paola Mejias set up her teammates all night long going for 41 assists. Mejias had four matches this season with 40 or more assists and 12 matches with 30 or more assists. Mejias recorded a new career high for assists in a season in 2024 having 660 total assists this year.
Rounding out the kills for the Lions was
Rachel Etim with nine,
Carly Fincham with seven and
Elon Ruley-Donadelle with six.
