Men’s Lacrosse Downs FDU-Florham 15-10 in Season Opener at Home

Elko and Van Der Horst each scored five goals today for Albright propelling the Lions to a season opening 15-10 victory over FDU-Florham.

READING, Pa. – The Albright men's lacrosse team (1-0) started the season on the right note downing FDU-Florham (0-1) 15-10 in today's season opener. James Elko and Joost Van der Horst each scored five goals today leading the Lions to victory.

Joost Van der Horst played in his first collegiate game this afternoon and made an immediate impact. Van der Horst scored five goals and registered two assists for a team high seven points on the afternoon. The Lion attacker tallied two unassisted goals of his five total goals.  

James Elko also scored five goals in today's game in an impressive performance for the Sophomore. Elko scored five goals all of last season and today, already matched his total from a season ago. Elko tallied one assist for six points in a strong performance this afternoon.

Albright held a one goal advantage (3-2) after the first 15 minutes of play. The Devils of FDU-Florham rallied in the second period to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.

After halftime, the Lion defense began to suffocate the FDU-Florham offense. The defense led to offense as Albright regained the lead heading into the final frame at 10-8. In the second half, Albright outscored the Devils 10-4.

FDU-Florham made it a 12-10 game with 6:02 left on the clock, however that would be the closest the Devils would come to catching the Lions. Albright closed the game on a 3-0 run on two goals from Elko and a goal from Jon Alvarez to win 15-10.

Jack Burke had a nice start to his season scoring twice and assisting on two Albright goals. Burke chipped in on the defensive end causing two turnovers.

Sean McNicholas made his first career start in net for Albright and picked up his first career win. The first-year goalie made 12 saves in the Lions victory.

Justinus Park won 12 faceoffs while collecting nine ground balls. Luke Williams added four ground balls for the Lions.

Albright held advantages in shots and ground balls. The Lions cashed in on extra man opportunities converting on three out of their four opportunities.

The men's lacrosse team will head on the road for the first time this season at Drew University. The game is set for next Saturday, February 17 at 1 p.m. from Madison, New Jersey.
