Big Third Quarter Propels Men’s Lacrosse to 14-11 Road Win Over Gwyneed Mercy

The Lions outscored the Griffins 6-2 in the third quarter to create separation on the scoreboard to ultimately win the game 14-11 on the road.

GWYNEED MERCY, Pa. – The Albright men's lacrosse team (2-1) got back in the win column on Wednesday (Feb. 21) evening beating Gwyneed Mercy (0-1) 14-11 on the road. Albright outscored Gwyneed Mercy 6-2 in the third quarter on their way to the teams second win of the young season.

Justinus Park had a career day setting a new program mark for groundballs recorded in a game. Park won 25 out of 29 faceoffs on his way to 20 groundballs. The new record of 20 groundballs for Park is a new career high while beating the previous best of 15 groundballs set back in 2014 by Darian Meador.  

Jack Burke went for a game high five goals scoring in every single quarter of the game. Burke also dished out one assist in the game marking the third straight game Burke has recorded an assist to begin the season. The six-point effort officially moves Burke into sixth all time for points in a career with 130 to date.

James Elko and Joost Van der Horst each scored three times in today's game to continue their hot start to the season. Van der Horst has now scored at least three goals in every game to begin the season and his Lion career. Elko now has a hattrick in two of the first three games. The duo combined for eight points with Elko adding two assists to his overall stat line.

Albright found themselves down early in the game trailing 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Lions began to climb back into the game in the second quarter outscoring Gwyneed Mercy 4-2 in the frame to trail at the half by one 7-6.

The third quarter is where the Lions really began to take control of the game. Gwyneed Mercy scored the first two goals of the quarter but the games next seven goals all went to Albright. Five different Lions scored in the third quarter in the forms of Jon Alvarez, Justin Moroney, Van der Horst, Burke and Elko. The seven unanswered goals gave the Lions a 13-9 lead late into the game.

Each team scored twice in the final 15 minutes with Burke putting the finishing touches on the game scoring the team's final goal to give the Lions the road victory.

Nick Antonio finished with three points on a goal and two assists while Moroney also finished with three points on a goal and two assists.

In addition to Alvarez's goal, the defenseman also tallied five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

As a team Albright was relentless on the offensive end firing 64 shots while also holding a distinct advantage in ground balls with 48 to the Griffins 30.

Albright will have a week off before returning home to square off against Lebanon Valley on February 28. The game is set for under the lights starting at 7 p.m.
