WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Albright baseball team (2-0) officially begun their 2024 season on Sunday afternoon and wasted no time picking up their first two wins of the season. Albright opened up the day against Elmira College (4-2) winning 14-3 and followed up that performance with a 17-6 win over SUNY Canton (0-3).
Today's games were played on the campus of Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
GAME 1: W, 14-3
The Lions recorded 13 hits plating 14 runs in their first game of the season. Albright opened the scoring plating three runs across the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead.
Albright broke the game wide open in the sixth and seventh innings scoring a combined nine runs in those innings. Albright tacked on two more runs in the eighth to secure the game one victory comfortably over Elmira.
Patrick Ahearn picked up his first win of his collegiate career tossing 2.1 innings. Ahearn only gave up one hit while striking out two batters.
Dominic Yeager started the game and pitched well across his 3.1 innings of work. Yeager struck out three while allowing only one earned run.
Deklyn Marks, Brenden Stuhltrager and
Nick Barton showed no signs of rust as each one collected three hits on the afternoon. Marks went 3-5 with all singles while Stuhltrager and Barton each had a double, triple, two runs scored and an RBI.
Aidan Sturtevant had the longest hit for the Lions today blasting a ball over the fence for a two-run home run. Sturtevant came on as a pinch hitter and roped a triple in his first at bat of the season. Sturtevant plated Barton on his home run who reached on a single the previous at bat.
Roman Berretta went 2-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Jack Gilmer collected two RBI's this afternoon on a single while also scoring a run for the Lions.
GAME 2: W, 17-6
The bats showed no signs of slowing down as Albright pounded out 15 hits in game two. The Lions scored three runs in the top of the first and then two more in the top of the second.
Owen Morais doubled for his first career hit and RBI as an Albright Lion in the first inning.
Albright held an 8-5 advantage after five innings of play. The sixth inning was kind to the Lions once again as Albright put a stamp on this game scoring six times in the frame. Overall, Albright plated the six runs on four hits in the inning.
Tyler Boccelli,
Tommy Lewman,
Thomas Aulisi and Stuhltrager all were credited with RBI's in the inning. From there, the Lions pitching staff was in complete control over the remaining four innings of the game to secure the game two win.
Stuhltrager, Lewman, Berretta and Boccelli all had two hits in today's game. Boccelli led with four RBI's and Berretta followed with two of his own. Lewman scored four runs while also earning two walks.
Recording at least one hit and one RBI for Albright was
Lucas Myford, Sturtevant, Morias and Aulisi.
The first-year trio of
J.D. Graziano,
Blake Schlueter and
Colby Yaich got the final nine out of the game making their first appearance in their Albright careers.
