READING, Pa. – The Albright College softball team (3-5, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth) opened up their home portion of the schedule this afternoon against York College (9-4, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth). Today's game was the first MAC Commonwealth game of the season for both teams. The York Spartans took both games of today's double header.
The Lions begun their season in Myrtle Beach at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic. The Lions won their first two games of the season beating Franciscan and St. Joseph's of Long Island by a combined score of 22-4. The Lions ended their six games in Myrtle Beach going 3-3 overall.
GAME 1 L, 9-1
Kathryn Baptiste collected both hits for the Lions in game one this afternoon going 2-3 at the plate. For Baptiste the two hit performance marks her third multi hit game of the season. One of the hits went for extra bases giving the sophomore slugger her second double of the young season.
York College (Pa.) is coming off a MAC Commonwealth title having won five straight elimination games a season ago to secure the conference championship. The Spartans scored six runs over the final two innings to take game one from the Lions.
Baptiste plated the run for the Lions in the second inning after a miscue by the York catcher that allowed Baptiste to score from second base.
The Lions got on base drawing five walks but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Veronica Heckman and
Marissa Rovenstine each tallied two walks for the Lions.
GAME 2 L, 13-3
Marissa Rovenstine had the big hit of the afternoon doubling down the right field line with the bases loaded scoring all three Lions on base. The York outfielder attempted to make a play on the ball but was unable to make the catch allowing three Albright runs to score. The double for Rovenstine was the first of the season and the first extra base of Rovenstine's career.
Rovenstine collected three more RBIs this afternoon now having five RBIs through eight games to start the season. The five RBIs are good for third on the team this season.
After Rovenstines bases clearing double, the score was 4-3 in favor of York heading into the top of the fourth inning. The Spartans were able to tack on four runs in the fourth and then five runs in the seventh to win both games of today's double header.
Rounding out the hits in game two for the Lions was
Monica Hernandez,
Heather Pomante and
Juliette Licata.
Licata now has 10 hits to begin the season leading the way offensively for Albright. Hernandez is just behind Licata recording eights in the first eight games played good for second on the team.
Scoring a run in game two for the Lions was Baptiste, Heckman and Hernandez.
