Second Half Surge from Men’s Basketball Falls Short against Ursinus

The Lions ended back-to-back home games to begin the year with a match against the Bears for the first time since the 2014-2015 season.

READING, Pa. – Men's Basketball (1-1) hosted their second game of the season at the Bollman Center against Ursinus (1-2) on Tuesday night. The visiting Bears would begin to seemingly run away early in the second half before the Lions battled back to take the game down to the final minute. Ultimately, Ursinus would sneak out with a 75-71 over the Lions.

Miles Smith played 21 minutes off the bench and is emerging as a valuable rotation piece for the Lions. Smith set a new career high with seven assists in addition to five rebounds while recording both a steal and block.

Scoring a team best 18 points was Jeremiah Stanton who also dished out six assists and hauled in five rebounds of his own.

After a slow start in the opening half, the Lions would end up going on a 15-4 run in the final five minutes to enter halftime with a 36-33 lead.

The Bears would start the second half seemingly firing on all cylinders and lead by as much as 15 with just under 10 minutes to go.

Qadir Mitchell would play a big role in what turned out to be an inspiring and exciting charge from the Lions. Mitchell finished with 17 points and a team best three three-pointers while also being one of three Lions to end the night with three steals.

Also ending the night in double figures was Chase McWhite who finished with 12 points and a team high nine rebounds. McWhite continues to show great defensive skills and finished with four combined steals and blocks.

After being all but out of the game, a 11-0 run for the Lions would cut the Bears' lead down to a one possession game (68-66) with just under two minutes to play.

The Bears would regain momentum and narrowly close out the Lions with a 7-5 run to end the game and give the Lions their first loss of the season.
