FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Men's basketball (1-2) went on the road for the first time this season opening play in the two-day Farmingdale State Tournament. The Lions opened with nationally ranked St. Joseph (Ct.) (2-2) and fell to the #25 team in the country 71-61.
Today marked the first day of the two-day Farmingdale State Tournament. The four teams competing in the tournament are Albright, Cortland, Farmingdale State and St. Joseph's (Ct.)
Cortland beat Farmingdale State in the first game of the tournament 79-78. Tomorrow's first game will feature Albright against Farmingdale State and second contest will feature Cortland against St. Joseph's (Ct.)
The opening 20 minutes of today's game was tightly contested. The teams found themselves tied on four separate occasions. A
Qadir Mitchell three pointer in the tail end of the first half cut the Lions halftime deficit to 35-30.
In the second half the Blue Jays did well to keep the Lions at arm's length throughout. Albright never trailed by more than 10 over the game's final 10 minutes but were unable to close their deficit by four or less points.
Mitchell finished the first half going 4-4 from downtown. The senior guard finished the game with a season high of 19 points. The scoring output was good for a game high.
Jeremiah Stanton scored 15 points while recording five rebounds and five assists. Through three games this season Stanton is averaging 16.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game and 5.6 assists per game.
Phanique Dupree gave three Lions in double figures, scoring 14 points while collecting seven rebounds and seven blocks. The seven blocks are tied for the fifth most in a game in program history.
Dupree is closing in on the program block record having 149 career blocks to date. With three more blocks, Dupree will own the single season and career program block record.
Miles Smith pulled in a career high six rebounds in 19 minutes of game action.
Akhir Keys chipped in with six points on two three-pointers.
