Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Close Loss at Home to Goucher

The Lions played in their second straight game at home on Saturday afternoon welcoming Goucher to town. The Gophers avenged last season’s loss to the Lions winning today 14-13.

READING, Pa.  – Men's lacrosse (1-6) welcomed Goucher (4-2) to town on Saturday afternoon playing in their second of four straight home games. The game came down to the wire as the Gophers were able to score the game-winning goal with 24 seconds on the clock to avenge last season's loss to the Lions.

Justin Moroney and Nick Antonio paced the offense with four goals each. The duo combined to score five of the teams seven goals in the third period. Moroney is up to 20 goals through seven games to start the year while Antonio tied his career high for goals in a game.

The game was closely contested in the first half as each team scored five goals in the first 20 minutes of play. 10 total goals came in the third period with Albright accounting for seven of them.

Heading into the fourth period, Albright held the advantage on the scoreboard but was unable to keep the Goucher Gophers away. Goucher scored twice with under two minutes to play to steal a win on the road over Albright.

Joost van Der Horst scored twice and assisted on another to end the day with three points. The attackman is closing in on 100 career points in just two seasons with the Lions. Van Der Horst has 94 career points to date on 60 goals and 34 career assists.

Ryan Houghtaling matched Moroney and Antonio with four points on the afternoon. Houghtaling accounted for two goals and two assists. The stat line is the first time this season where Houghtaling has had at least two goals and two assists in the same game.

Hunter Fitterling continues to be a menace on the defensive end causing three more turnovers today. Fitterling is one of the best defenders in the conference accounting for 18 total caused turnovers in just seven games played.

Justinus Park won 19-30 faceoffs and tied his season high with eight ground balls. Ryan Conover was strong defensively causing two turnovers.
