Women’s Basketball’s Game with Stevenson Comes Down to Final Shot

The Lions returned to the Bollman Center to face the Mustangs after playing their last two on the road.

READING, Pa. – Women's Basketball (8-10, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth) faced Stevenson (7-11, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth) for the first of back-to-back home games. After trailing by as much as 13 early, the Lions fought back to take the lead a number of times in what turned out to be a 61-59 win for the Mustangs.

Kenedy Cooper led the way for the Lions with 14 points including a pair of three pointers to go along with six rebounds and a steal on the defensive end. Cooper was one of four Lions to finish the night in double figures.

With Stevenson building up and early lead, Julia Zakovitch helped the Lions' offense get in gear with a number of early buckets, several of which came off of forced turnovers.

The Mustangs would enter halftime with a 33-24 lead with the Lions looking to contain a high-powered Stevenson offense while continuing to improve their own offensive efforts.

The third quarter would wind up going well in favor for Albright as the Lions outscored the Mustangs 24-14 which included them taking their first lead of the night (39-38). CJ Apistar played a big part on both sides of the ball and recorded a team best five steals and tied for the team lead in assists with three while scoring 12 of her own.

Ciarra Gibbs converted on five of her seven shots for 13 points to lead all bench players in 30 minutes of game action.

Five lead changes would occur in the fourth quarter as both teams fought for momentum and buckets in the final minutes. A three pointer from Cooper would give the Lions the lead (58-57) with just over a minute to play.

After the Mustangs took the lead back in the final minute, the Lions would fall just short after a pair of missed shots on their final possession.
