Catania and Contreras garner weekly conference award

NEWTOWN, Pa. – Ilaria Catania (women's golf) and Matias Contreras (men's tennis) were rewarded for their strong play by being named the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.

This is the first time this season Catania or any member of the women's golf program has earned the weekly award. Contreras is also a first-time recipient this season and he is the fourth consecutive member of the Lions men's tennis team to receive the honor.

Catania averaged an 89.0 in two rounds of golf this past week. The senior finished with a 94, which placed her tied for fourth in the field of 15 golfers at the Weyhill Classic hosted by Moravian University last Monday. Catania followed that up with a first place showing after carding a score of 84 this past Sunday at the Shriver's Saltwater Shootout. She finished nine strokes ahead of the second-place finisher.

Catania and the women's golf team will enjoy a short hiatus before returning to action on Monday, October 19 at the Lebanon Valley Fall Invitational.

Contreras battled hard in a pair of singles and doubles matches this past week. The sophomore paired up with David Garces Cifuentes to pick up a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles against Division II West Chester University. In singles action against the Golden Rams, Contreras suffered a setback, 6-4, 6-0 playing out of the No. 3 spot. Contreras and Miguel Munoz Coryn picked up a thrilling 7-5 win at third doubles against Moravian University on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore followed that up with a come-from-behind three set win at No. 2 singles. Contreras dropped the opening set 3-6, but won 7-6 in the second after winning the tiebreaker by a 7-3 margin. He picked up the win with a 6-1 win in the decisive third set.

Contreras and the men's tennis team will play host to Mercer County Community College at 3:30 p.m. later this afternoon (October 6).
