READING, Pa. – Men's Basketball (12-9, 8-2 MAC Commonwealth) played the first of three straight games on the road against Alvernia (11-9, 5-5 MAC Commonwealth). Both teams saw momentum tip in their favor which resulted in an overtime being needed to decide today's contest. The Lions prevailed in the end winning 85-75.
The Lions started the first half strong and found themselves leading for majority of the opening frame.
Chase McWhite turned in his best performance of the season and led all scorers with 32 points making six threes while hauling in 16 rebounds giving spectators a show on both sides of the ball. Both totals were good for career highs.
Albright led 37-33 after the first 20 minutes of play largely impart to their three-point shooting. Four Lions would end the night with multiple three pointers and combined to shoot 45.5% from downtown.
The second half for the Lions began with momentum continuing to be on their side as the team built their lead up as high as 11 points (54-43).
Phanique Dupree would play a big part alongside McWhite in the team's two-way effort and finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
As time winded down in regulation, Alvernia's high powered offense started to go on a roll leading to the Golden Wolves coming back and eventually taking a 69-63 lead with just under two minutes to play.
What then followed was a 9-2 run in favor of the Lions capped off by a
Jeremiah Stanton three pointer to tie the game as time expired. Stanton finished with 11 points and tied a season best with eight assists in addition to contributing on the defensive end with a block and steal.
With momentum completely back on their side, the Lions dominated the overtime period outscoring Alvernia 13-3 holding the Golden Wolves to a 11.1% shooting performance when it mattered most to hold on for an exhilarating 85-75 win.
Qadir Mitchell recorded 12 points to continue his streak of scoring 10 or more points in every game this season and recorded the assist on Stanton's game tying three pointer.
