READING, Pa - Baseball (7-3-1, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) split the Saturday doubleheader against cross town rival Alvernia (5-5, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth). Albright would win the series 2-1 following their 12-8 victory on Friday. Albright took the first today 13-10. The Golden Wolves responded by winning game two 5-3. This is Albright's first series win against Alvernia since 2014.
Game 1:Â
Albright found itself down early in the first game of the afternoon trailing 2-0 after the first two innings. Back to back hits from Tommy Lewman and Chris Gorla would change that and leave the game squared at two.Â
The Golden Wolves responded with eight runs of their own through the next two innings to jump out to a 10-2 lead through four.
The Lions would begin to climb back into the game with hits from
Plyler Hunter and
John Pecoraro to trim the Alvernia lead to six.Â
Albright would then explode for five runs in the top of the sixth headlined by a Gorla three-run blast to left field. It was Gorla's first of the year and seventh of his career. Albright would be able to knot the game at 10 on an
Anthony Knight single in the top of the seventh.Â
The game would remain there until the top of the ninth. The Lions would load the bases on a walk and two bunts with
Michael Avino at the dish. Avino put the ball in play and caused a throwing error allowing for two runs to come across the plate. Lewman, Knight, and Gorla would all walk and force in another run to bump the lead to three for Albright.Â
Wayne Hudson would slam the door shut for the Lions and seal the win at 13-10. Hudson pitched excellently out of the bullpen pitching three perfect innings not allowing a walk or hit.Â
Avino, Lewman, Knight and Gorla all had a multi hit game with Gorla driving in a season high five runs.Â
Game 2:
Game two between the Lions and Golden Wolves would feature much less offense and turn into a pitchers duel.
Alvernia would strike first, collecting a run in the bottom of the second. Albright would respond in kind with a run of their own in the top of the third. Christian Eckstein and John Pecoraro would single, allowing Michael Avino to drive in a run via a ground out. Eckstein finished game two going three for three.Â
The Golden Wolves would respond with three more runs in the bottom of the third.
Plyler Hunter would grab one back with a double in the top of the fourth that was then quickly canceled out in the bottom of the inning.Â
The only other run in the game for Albright saw Hunter hit into a fielder's choice and allow for
Tyler Boccelli to score leaving the score at 5-3 in favor of Alvernia.Â
Tommy Lewman would yet again have a good game at the dish for the Albright collecting two hits. Lewman is slashing an astonishing .541/.638/.730 and holds an OPS over 1000 at 1.368 through 11 games.
Anthony Knight and Eckstein also hold an OPS above 1000 at 1.130 and 1.043, respectively.Â
Patrick Ahearn would be excellent for the Lions out of the bullpen throwing two and a third innings of one run ball on four hits.Â
