Softball Sweeps Widener in Conference Doubleheader

The Lions began the first of two consecutive home series and hosted the Pride.

READING, Pa. – Albright Softball (10-14, 4-4 MAC Commonwealth) played at home for the first time this month against Widener (6-16, 1-5 MAC Commonwealth). The Lions bats were on fire for both games leading to their first conference sweep of the season.

Game 1:

The Lions offense broke through in the third inning with four runs to put them our front early. Katie Behler singled to right field to score Juliette Licata and Adriana Buonacore for the game's first runs. Also driving in a pair was Grace Landante who brought two more home with a deep double to right center.

After the Pride answered back with a run in the top of the fourth, the Lions responded with a seven-run explosion the following half inning to hold and 11-1 lead after four. Behler, Alexis Laboy, Madison Lasko and Emma Massie all drove in runs.

The Lions held down the fort the following inning to have game one called after five innings in the form of a 11-2 victory.

Caitlin Mahady pitched a complete game in what was her first win of the season and held the pride to only four hits as a team.

Game 2:

Game two started out in the Pride's favor with three runs in the top of the second inning. The pride would then be held scoreless until the seventh as the Lions battled back.

Faith Sanchez-Schroeder stole home in the bottom of the fourth to get the Lions on the board in one of the most exciting ways possible. Licata would double shortly after to bring the Lions within one by a score of 3-2.

In the fifth inning, the Lions would put up their second seven spot of the day allowing them to take a 9-3 lead after five innings. Mya Frana would drive a run in on a fielder's choice before Slaydon Fisher also joined in on the offensive barrage with an RBI single to left field.

Gabriella Weiss pitched 5.2 innings in relief and struck out four batters to earn her sixth win of the season.

Following today's doubleheader, the Lions currently sit at fourth in the conference playoff race.
