KUTZTOWN, PA - The Lady Lions kicked off their 2009 campaign taking on their toughest opponent of the season in Division II Kutztown University Friday evening at Keystone Hall.
Entering the meet, the Red and White were riding a six meet unbeaten streak, but unfortunately that streak came to an end with the Golden Bears defeating Albright by the final score of 150-103.
For the first time this season Albright was only able to record one first place finish. In the first event of the evening the 200 yard medley relay, the Red and White finished in third and fourth place respectively.
At Right: Allison Fies recorded a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle
Adrienne Peoples (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) put together a solid performance in the 1,000 yard freestyle placing second overall with a time of 11:24.28. Behind her was Sarah Noonan (Frederick, MD/Urbana) who posted a final time of 11:27.72.
Sophomore Allison Fies (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) brought home the only first place finish for the Red and White in the 200 yard freestyle. With a season best time of 2:00.53, the Reading native recorded a much needed nine points for the Lady Lions. Fies continued to add points to the Albright score eventually earning an additional four following a second place finish in the 50 yard freestyle (26.15).
Lauren Onusko (Winstead, CT/The Gilbert School) also recorded four more points for her squad following a second place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. With a time of 58.44 Onusko managed to power past Kutztown's Stephanie Kearns defeating her by .7 seconds.
As the evening continued Albright saw strong showings from a variety of swimmers, but unfortunately it was too little too late as the Golden Bears lead proved too much for the Lady Lions.
