Swimming Finishes in Second Place at MAC's

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Still in the hunt to earn their fifth straight conference championship, the Lions knew that they were going to be very busy in the final two days of the MAC Championships.

In Saturday's crucial meet, Albright totaled three first place finishes. The first top time went to Tara McAdams (Phoenixville, PA/Great Valley) in the 100 yard butterfly. With a time of 1:02.27, McAdams earned the Lions a crucial 20 points. Behind her was Kelly Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) who finished in fourth place with a time of 1:04.65.

Prior to McAdams victory in the 100 fly, senior Jessica Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) finished in third place in the 400 yard IM. Williams ended the event with a time of 4:53.32, while teammate Adrienne Peoples (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) finished the race in fifth place with a final time of 5:01.86. Allison Fies (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) gave the Red and White another victory in the 200 yard freestyle. Her career best time of 1:58.37 gave Albright another 20 points as they continued to battle it out with Misericordia for the lead.

Finishing in fourth place in the 200 yard free was Erika Giberson (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), and in seventh place was Lauren Onusko (Winstead, CT/The Gilbert School). The afternoon's final victory belonged to the relay team of Aimee Snyder (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg), Giberson, Sarah Noonan (Frederick, MD/Urbana), and Fies. The four swimmers earned a final time of 8:08.03 to take the 800 yard freestyle relay.

On the final day of competition Albright added two more top marks to their total as well as numerous top five finishers. The Lions got an early start with a first place time of 18:31.98 by Peoples in the 1,650 yard freestyle. Behind Peoples in third place was Kelly Williams who recorded a time of 18:58.39.

Snyder claimed a third place finish in the 200 yard backstroke with a career best time of 2:16.77. Albright posted four top ten finishers in the 100 yard freestyle. Led by Fies third place mark of 55.53, the Lions earned a combined 46 points in the event.

The championship's final individual event, the 200 yard butterfly, went to senior Jess Williams, who posted a time of 2:15.02. Next to her the entire way was McAdams who ended the event in second place (2:18.71).

Albright had their hands full in the final event of the day, the 400 yard freestyle relay. In probably one of their closest races all season, the Lions fell to a tough Misericordia team by only .65 of a second (3:42.90). The relay victory for the Cougars also secured the top spot in the standings as they were named the 2009 conference champions.
