READING, Pa. - Hungry for a win, the Men's Soccer (1-3-2) hosted the Griffins of Gwynedd-Mercy College (3-3) Tuesday evening at Shirk Stadium. The two teams played a very physical match, but it was the Griffins that walked away with a 1-0 victory.
The action got off to a very quick start, as the Lions offense pressed throughout the first 20 minutes of play. Gwynedd-Mercy did not get their first chance at the Lions goal until the midway point of the opening half. Neither team would capitalize through the first 45 minutes of play. Coming up with two saves in the first half was Albright goalkeeper #
Billy Howard#.
In the offensive third the red and white looked to a variety of players including #
Mark Yost# and #
Adam Toroniewski#. Both players had a few opportunities throughout the contest, but were unable to drive home the crucial shot.
Following the halftime break, both teams stepped back on the field looking for that much needed offensive spark. The stalemate continued in the second half, as the Lions battled the Griffins in the middle third of the field through the first 20 minutes of play.
One of Albright's best chances came on a free-kick opportunity at the top of the Griffins' goal box. Freshman #
David Folino# drove the ball into the box but was unable to connect with his teammates.
Albright continued to pressure their opponent, but it was Gwynedd-Mercy that struck first. Tim Mumford managed to play the ball over the top of the Lions defense landing perfectly on Matthew Meier's foot.
Meier's then played the ball past Howard to break the scoreless draw in the 73rd minute. Down by one the Lions continued to battle fiercely throughout the remaining minutes of the match.
With less than three minutes to play, Folino got another solid chance this time on a loose ball from about 35 yards out. Folino drove the ball to the low far post, but Griffins' goalie Mike Leonard came up with the huge save to preserve his team's 1-0 lead and the win.
Albright closed out Tuesday's contest with a total of eight shots, while the Griffins recorded 10. Each team tallied two corner kicks, and Albright led the match in saves with four.
