Men's Soccer Suffers Double OT Setback in Season Finale

Box Score

READING, Pa. - With about eight minutes left to play in the second overtime period, Matt Snively stepped into the goal box to take a penalty kick opportunity. With the game tied a 1-1, Snively drove the ball directly into Albright goalkeeper Phil Jones. Despite making the huge save, the ball managed to bounce right back to Snively who then drilled it home to give the Warriors a 2-1 double overtime win Saturday afternoon in Shirk Stadium.

Prior to the last minute fireworks that would end the Lions 2010 season, Saturday's match was a physical battle. Albright (9-8-1/1-5-1 CC) still in the hunt for a possible postseason bid to the ECAC tournament knew they needed to pick-up the win to keep their chances alive. Lycoming (8-10-1/1-5-1 CC), winless in conference play going into the match, were looking to end their season on a positive note.

The Warriors were the first team to end the scoreless draw as Snively managed to knock in a pass from Will Reiber and Dominick Dorsey in the 77th minute. However, the Lions would come right back just six minutes later when Shawn Murphy connected with the head of Gibrilla Conde. The freshman forward redirected Murphy's kick to the near post to even the score at 1-1.

Conde's goal marked the eighth of his sensational freshman season, while Murphy's assist was his third of his standout rookie season. After regulation ended in the 1-1 draw, the two team retook the field for the first overtime period. Lycoming would record the only two shots of the period, with neither one finding the back of the net.

In the second overtime, some chippy play and a near melee would eventually set-up what could have been the game winning penalty kick opportunity. After Snively's first attempt at goal was stopped dead by Jones, the loose ball on the rebound gave him the window he needed to secure the win for his squad.

On the afternoon, Lycoming held a 14-10 shot advantage over the Lions. They also led the match in corner kick opportunities recording eight as compared to Albright's two.

Despite the loss, Albright can still walk away knowing that their nine win season, was the first since 1999, and with a majority of key players returning next season, the future looks bright for the men's soccer program. Albright will lose two players to graduation in Chas DeSanto and Matt Pannella.
