Volleyball Out of Playoff Race with Loss at Lycoming

Box Score

The Albright College volleyball team fell victim to a 12-0 Lycoming run in game two as the Lions lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-22) to the Warriors, Tuesday in Williamsport, Pa.

Albright needed a win at Lycoming and a loss by Elizabethtown tomorrow in order to qualify for the Commonwealth Conference playoffs.

Albright was in position to grab momentum with a 16-13 lead in the second game, but suffered a devastating 0-12 run that all but knocked the Lions out of playoff contention.

After falling behind early 5-1, the Lions recovered to lead 8-7 after an ace by Casey McFadden and a Lycoming error.  Albright broke a 9-9 tie by scoring five straight points with Erin Wentzel serving to open its biggest game lead of the day.

A Lycoming attack error soon made it 16-13, but Albright would not score another point in the game as Lyco rattled off 12 straight points including a stunning five aces in the same turn by Katelyn McKillop.

Albright again led 16-13 in the third and final game on senior Meg Wheeler's kill, but went on to drop a close 25-22 decision in that set.

The Lions had put themselves in an early 4-0 hole in game one, but three Lycoming errors and an ace by Morgan Heath (Albright's season leader in that category) allowed the visitors to creep back to within one.

Albright was again within a point at 15-14, after a kill by freshman Brandy Blimline and a Warrior attack error. Lyco quickly stretched that gap to 20-15 however, forcing Albright to call timeout.

Albright made one more run after Alyssa Hoogendoorn recorded a kill and then served Albright to three consecutive points (one ace) to make it 23-21, but Lycoming recovered to close out the opening set.

Heath finished with 19 assists, while McFadden had a team-high nine digs. Hoogendoorn was extremely efficient, with four kills in six attempts (.667).

The Lions (8-20) finish their Commonwealth schedule at 2-5 and will wrap up the 2011 season on Friday with a trip to Penn State-Altoona.
