Sophomore Steve Thomas won three events as the Albright College men's swimming team defeated visiting Messiah 120-82, Saturday in the Natatorium.
Albright started out well with Thomas,
Josh Park,
Drew Leahy and
Bobby McNair teaming up to take the 400 medley relay, in 3:50.35.
Rick Sutton then led a 1-2 Albright finish in the 1650 free, finishing in 17:27.05 and being followed by teammate
Sean Spellacy. Junior
Adam Kurtz and senior
Zach McElheny took the top two places in the 200 free.
Unbelievably, Sutton's time missed the Albright pool record by just .01 seconds in the mile race, a mark set by
Andy Ikeler back in 2002.
Messiah took the 50 free and nearly had second and third place in the 400 IM, but junior
Matt Bauer ran down his opponent in the freestyle leg to grab third behind Thomas' first-place finish. The race kept Albright firmly in the driver's seat with a 60-32 lead.
Thomas was back later with win in the 100 back, following first-places by Leahy (100 fly, 54.92) and
Mike McBride (100 free, 49.20).
Sutton led an Albright sweep in the 500 free, with Spellacy again in second and
Connor Unger in third.
Albright improves to 6-1, and 4-0 in the MAC. The Lions will compete at the Swarthmore Invitational on December 2-3.
