Jordan Cassidy and
Katie Cooper each had a pair of goals as the Albright College women's soccer team beat PSU-Berks 4-0 in its season opener, Thursday at Shirk Stadium.
The damage was all done in the second half after a relatively quiet first 45 minutes. Cassidy opened the Lions' 2011 scoring account in the 53rd minute, poking the ball home after an extended goalmouth scramble. Sophomore
Stephanie Przybyszewski earned the assist on the play.
Just over five minutes later Cassidy had her second, ripping a shot inside the far left post after a nice through ball from
Lauren O'Brien.
Cooper followed that up with two goals in a 13-minute span, also beating the Berks keeper to the far post on both occasions. Cooper's 71st minute goal to make it 3-0 came off a neat lob over the top from junior
Alex Talbot.
Returning starter
Olivia Giuliano earned the victory in goal but senior
Keeley Peltz made an impression as a reserve, smothering a chance from just two yards out in the dying minutes of the game.
While the Lions ran rampant in the second half, they were held in check in the opening period, with PSU-Berks goalkeeper
Savannah Cramer stopping five shots before the break.
Albright sophomore
Mel Sullivan hit the post directly off a corner kick, and
Kirstie Potteiger lofted a 35-yard shot just over the crossbar in a scoreless first half.
The Lions (1-0) continue their season on Saturday when they face Gwynedd-Mercy at Alvernia.
