The Albright College volleyball team defeated Division-II competition as they claimed victory over Chestnut Hill College in a 3-2 (24-26, 25-18, 17-25, 27-25, 17-15) nail-biter, Saturday in the Bollman Center.
Albright was down 2-1 after the third set but momentum shifted towards the Lions in the fourth game when freshman
Kyrsten Stanford blasted the ball into the ground late in the set to take the lead, 19-18. The Lions then had a series of unanswered kills that allowed them to extend their lead to 23-19.
Chestnut Hill tied the game back up when
Kailey Arlen tipped the ball, tripping up the Lions (25-25). Sophomore
Christa Mantz answered with a kill allowing Albright to take the lead again.
Junior
Alyssa Hoogendoorn, who recorded two aces during the game, served the winning set-point, when Chestnut Hill returned the serve out of bounds, giving the Lions the momentum they needed to carry them through the fifth set.
During the fifth game, sophomore setter
Morgan Heath and Hoogendoorn blocked a Griffin attack to gain the lead, 10-7. Chestnut Hill answered and the points were back and forth with kills from both sides of the net.
Stanford came through again for Albright with one last spike that the Griffins were unable to return to give them the lead, 16-15. Chestnut Hill's final attack went out of bounds (17-15) giving the Lions their third win in a row.
Mantz lead the team with 16 kills, with Stanford also in double digits (14 kills). Heath had 39 assists total and three kills of her own.
The Lions proved to be strong defensively with Mantz leading the team in digs (20). Juniors
Erin Wentzel and
Alexa Jones recovered 14 digs apiece.
Hoogendoorn and Heath teamed up for a total of three blocks, two of which occurred back-to-back in the first set that Albright won.
Albright hits the court again on Tuesday, at Elizabethtown College at 7 pm.
