Senior captain
Beth Moran scored the winner with just 72 seconds remaining as the Albright College field hockey team rallied to beat visiting Neumann, 2-1 on Thursday.
Moran finished off a goal-mouth scramble in the 69th minute, off an assist from
Amelia Perry. Earlier in the half, senior
Rose Casesi played a penalty corner then got into the goalmouth to redirect
Kaitlyn Pietrusewicz's blast and tie the game at 1-1.
The two second half goals erased a 1-0 deficit after Neumann went into the break leading by one. On the counterattack,
Ellyn Jones found
Ashley Verbonitz all alone in front of goal for the game's opening tally.
The goal came against the run of play as the Lions started off on the front foot.
Kelsey Ruch found Allison Dombrowski at the left side in the opening minutes, but the freshman couldn't quite get around on her shot.
Eight minutes in, shots from both Pietrusewicz and Dombowski were kicked away in succession by Neumann goalie
Lindsey Kasecamp. Casesi then tried to redirect Dombrowski's shot but had it cleared off the goalline.
With the game tied at 1-1, Dombrowski nearly put Albright ahead but her shot off a penalty corner hit the left post. Neumann nearly countered against the run of play, just like on their goal, but Lions defender
Madison Bailey did well to break up the dangerous chance. A few minutes later, Bailey swiped the ball away just as the Knights'
Marisa Rizzo was about to pull the trigger.
Sophomore goalie
Marguerite DeLucas needed to make five saves to earn her second victory of the season. She made a kick stop late in the first half, and then came up with a good save off a corner with under 14 minutes to play.
The Lions improve to 2-7 with the victory and have now won two straight contests heading into their Commonwealth Conference opener, Saturday at Widener.
