The Albright College volleyball team earned its first Commonwealth Conference victory on Wednesday, sweeping Hood 3-0 in the Bollman Center.
The Lions were extremely efficient in the 25-9, 26-24, 25-11 win. Sophomore
Brandy Blimline had seven kills and no errors on 11 attempts, while senior
Alyssa Hoogendoorn was even better (8 kills, 0 errors, 11 attempts). Junior
Christa Mantz had 12 kills and just four errors.
Senior
Alexa Jones had three service aces, 14 digs and 17 receptions. Junior
Morgan Heath added 27 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore
Marisa Bartone had five kills.
After cruising in the first set and opening up a second-game lead, Hood charged back with a kill and then an ace from
Brittany Lethbridge to lead 24-23.
Facing set point, Heath came up with a great solo block to keep Albright alive. An emphatic spike from Hoogendoorn put the Lions back ahead as they escaped with the 26-24 decision.
Albright then ripped off an extended run with
Casey McFadden serving to go up 13-1 in set three. Mantz had kills to make ot 7-1 and 11-1. Bartone's second try on the point succeeded to put Albright up 12-1, and Blimline's spike pushed that advantage to 13-1.
Freshman
Eden Calhoun got on the floor and had a kill to put the Lions ahead 21-9. Bartone's spike made it 23-9, and she added another kill to clinch the victory.
The match was the first home volleyball game to be video streamed live by Albright Athletics. There will also be live video of Albright's Senior Day match vs. Arcadia next Thursday. The Lions are 6-12, 1-6 and play a tri-match at Delaware Valley on Saturday.
