In an exciting, back-and-forth battle on Homecoming night, the Albright College men's soccer team tied Stevenson University 4-4 at Shirk Stadium.
At one point there were five goals in just over six minutes, and neither team ever led by more than a goal. Both teams scored three times in less than 20 minutes early in the second half.
Junior
Tyler Waters and freshman
Kiko DeLeon each had a goal and an assist for the Lions, while
Taylor Walton and
Fran Schmutz scored their first career goals.
In a span of 6:13 just after halftime,
Nicholas Haley slotted home to tie the game at 1-1, Schmutz headed in
Austin Phillips' corner kick, Haley and
Steve Hamilton each assisted each other to take the lead, and Walton scrambled home an equalizer following another Albright corner.
Waters put the Lions up 5-4 in the 67th minute, ripping a shot off the crossbar and in. He then blew past the entire Stevenson defense but had his shot saved.
Albright nearly escaped with the win, but
Vincent Conti rescued the Mustangs with a header in the 88th minute, off another helper from Hamilton (goal, 3 assists).
The ball ended up in Mustangs goal with just four seconds left in regulation and Schmutz,
Shawn Murphy and Phillips attacking the box, but the offsides flag was already raised.
Another strange play ended with the ball in Stevenson's goal in overtime, as
Brad Wood's header at the doorstep actually hit the underside of the football crossbar and was dead before it deflected into the net.
In the 28th minute, Waters' throw-in was cleared back to him, and he crossed to DeLeon. The freshman's powerful header found the net and gave Albright a 1-0 lead.
The Lions had most of the chances in the first half, with DeLeon heavily active. Early on, Schmutz swing ball in to DeLeon, who tried to cross to Waters before the pass was claimed by Stevenson keeper
Kenneth Hershey.
Albright is 8-8-1, 2-4-1 heading into its final home game of the season- Tuesday vs. Alvernia.
