The Albright College men's soccer team fell short in a Senior Day showdown with cross-town rival Alvernia Tuesday night, falling 2-0 to the Crusaders in Shirk Stadium.
There was a dangerous deflection on an Alvernia cross right after halftime. Albright defender
Kris Gross safely shielded away a defender in front of goal, but
Joe Raymond crossed it back into the box and
Alex Martyn scrambled it in for the opening tally.
Alex's brother
Kyle Martyn attacked seconds after the goal, but skidded a shot wide. Martyn had another dangerous chance in the 65th minute however, and crossed to
Josh Wollaston for a 2-0 scoreline.
Jack Biggerstaff broke free down the left side in the 77th minute, but his dangerous cross went through the box untouched.
A slow first half featured just one shot on goal (for Alvernia), and no corner kicks for either team. The Crusaders held an 8-1 advantage in shots, but only one of them was on target.
Wollaston had a good mid-range effort in the first half, but missed wide left. The Lions only shot before halftime came in the 35th minute, as Waters was blocked.
It was Senior Day for the Lions and three Albright student-athletes played their final game at Shirk Stadium. Starting in net was senior
Ryan Barr, who made his 21st career start and eclipsed 2,000 minutes for his career.
Tom Villani saw time at midfield for the Lions in his 68th career appearance, while goalkeeper
Steve Pyle also played in the midfield.
Villani almost crashed the net in the 88th minute, but the low cross was blocked by an Alvernia defender.
Shawn Murphy was there for the rebound, with his shot deflecting right at the keeper.
Albright is 8-9-1, 2-5-1 heading into its final regular season game, Saturday night at nationally-ranked Messiah.
