In a meet that came down to the last few events, the Albright women's swim team clinched victory over Messiah College, 141-121.
The Lions started off the meet coming in second and fourth in the opening relay, and then sophomores
Amanda Osterlind and
Liz Muller took first and third in the second event (the 1000-yard freestyle) to make the score 18-18.
In the next event junior
Codi Herr took first in the 200-yard freestyle with sophomore
Gwen Stefan claiming third and giving the Lions a temporary lead.
Herr would go on to take first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.65, touching out Messiah's
Katelynn Sagaser by just .15.
The Falcons went on to take first place in the next three events giving them an edge up on the Lions.
Even with
Lauren Cormier,
Kari Keller, and
Emily Summers taking second, third and fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Herr clinching first in the 50-yard freestyle, the Falcons were still up 68-63.
Then, Stefan, senior
Madison Hauk (who also took first in the 200-yard IM), and sophomore
Adina Gaughran went 1-3-5 in the 100-yard freestyle, starting the Lion's battle from behind.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Huizing took first place in the 200-yard backstroke to tie the score at 94.
In the 200-yard breaststroke Keller, Muller and Cormier all scored for the Lions, and then Osterlind and Stefan took first and third in the 500-yard freestyle to put the Lions up for good, 106-101.
Going into the last event, the Lions just needed to clinch first place to claim victory. With both teams neck- in- neck, Stefan took the final leg of the relay for the Lions and
Hanna Schaffer dove in with the same time for the Falcons. But it was ultimately Stefan who out touched Schaffer by .02 seconds, a call that came down to the official's decision by sight.
The Lady Lions are back in action at the West Chester invitational from November 30 – December 1.
