After a tight first set, the Albright College volleyball team was eventually beaten 3-0 by Lycoming, Tuesday in Commonwealth Conference action in the Bollman Center.
The Warriors fought off a first set comeback by the Lions to take a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-19) decision.
Junior
Christa Mantz had a game-high eight kills to go with 13 receptions. Seniors
Casey McFadden (22 digs, 17 receptions),
Alyssa Hoogendoorn (5 kills, 3 total blocks) and
Erin Wentzel (14 assists) all contributed as well.
Lycoming lead 6-3 in the first set but Albright tied it up after a kill and a block solo by Mantz. A McFadden ace gave Albright its largest lead, 13-10, but the Warriors fought back to lead 22-18 after a pair of aces from
Bethany Richardson (one of which bounced off the top of the net).
The Lions rallied, fighting to within 23-22 after a
Marisa Bartone block and a Lycoming ball handling error. Albright again got to within a point on
Morgan Heath's solo block, but
Chelsee Strine's kill ended it as the visitors took the final two points.
Lycoming started off hitting a perfect 4-for-4 in game two and led 8-5 before a block by Bartone and
Alexa Jones. Hoogendoorn's block made it 11-10 Lyco, but the Warriors ran off six straight points to pull away.
Jones and Hoogendoorn's block gave Albright a 3-0 lead in the third and final set, but
Katelyn McKillop's ace capped a 7-0 Lycoming run. Bartone's kill made it 8-7, but the Warriors again pulled away.
Jackie Oliva had a kill to make it 14-11, and a fantastic diving dig from libero
Kristen Whitehead preserved the play and allowed the Warriors to go up 18-11.
Albright is 2-7, 0-4 and will compete in a tri-match at Gwynedd-Mercy on Saturday, facing the hosts and Rosemont College.
