The meet came down to the final relay, but the Albright College women's swimming team came up just short in a 106.5-98.5 loss at Susquehanna at Saturday.
The Lions could have stolen the win in the 400 free relay, but
Codi Herr,
Tricia Janowiak,
Kaitlyn Huizing and
Gwen Stefan came in second, losing 3:46.56 to 3:50.59 to Susquehanna's “A” squad.
Lauren Cormier (1:12.00) and
Kari Keller (1:13.17) gave Albright a chance by grabbing the top two spots in the 100 breast, the day's penultimate event.
With every point being vital, Susquehanna's
Devin Lessard went toe-to-toe with Albright's best athletes. She beat
Amanda Osterlind by 1.85 seconds in the 1000 free, with the Lions'
Gwen Stefan taking third place.
Lessard then became one of the only swimmers to beat Herr in an individual race this season, swimming 59.83 in the 100 fly to win by 0.55 seconds.
Albright finally got the better of Lessard late in the meet, as Osterlind (5:20.64) and Stefan beat her out in the 500 free.
Huizing, Keller,
Madison Hauk and Cormier had opened up the meet by winning the 200 medley relay, in 1:57.10.
Herr won the 200 free, in 1:59.28. Janowiak then took the 50 free with a time of 26.07.
Suquehanna swept the 200 IM however, and Albright could later only gain a third place in the 100 free, with Janowiak's 57.30. Huizing took the 100 back, in 1:03.57.
The Lions finish their regular season with a 10-4 dual meet record. The Lions will be back in action at the MAC championships on Feb. 8-10 at the Wilkes-Barre CYC, with the Red and White attempting to defend their conference title.
