The Albright College volleyball team broke open a tight match in the fourth set, beating Penn State-Brandywine 3-1 on the road Thursday evening.
After three back-and-forth games, Albright dominated late for a 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-9 victory.
Senior
Christa Mantz had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while junior
Brandy Blimline also had 11 kills to go with three blocks. Senior
Morgan Heath totaled 36 assists. Freshmen
Maddy Greth (eight kills, 12 digs) and
Caitlin Klotzbach (19 digs) also contributed.
Albright played a scintillating fourth game, hitting .458 as a team with 12 kills and just one error.
Leading 7-4,
Jordan Gibson ran off six straight serves, culminating in a Mantz kill. Blimline soon had consecutive kills for a 20-6 lead, forcing Brandywine to call timeout. Another Blimline kill brought Albright to match point, and the Lions wrapped it up on a PSU attack error.
The Lions led 12-11 in the opening game when three straight Brandywine errors extended the gap. Mantz had two kills to make it 19-13, and Gibson's kill gave Albright a 24-18 advantage.
The hosts pulled back game two, and Albright answered with another 25-18 decision in the third. Trailing 4-3, another service run from Gibson helped the Lions re-take the lead.
Amanda Rasley led PSU-Brandywine with 13 kills, and setter
Miranda Biondi had 34 assists.
Albright improves to 6-10 and will play this weekend at the MAC Crossover Tournament. The Lions face host Manhattanville at 11 a.m. and then King's College at 3 p.m.
