Manhattanville Box
King's Box
The Albright College volleyball team swept two matches on Saturday, bookending its day with a pair of dominant sets.
The Lions beat Manhattanville and King's College as part of the MAC Crossover Tournament, where teams from the Freedom and Commonwealth Conferences faced off in four-team pods over the weekend.
Albright began its day with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-21) victory over the host Valiants.
Senior
Christa Mantz had a game-high 12 kills; she made just two attack errors and hit .357 for the game, while adding 11 digs.
Maddy Greth had 10 kills and hit .333, while setter
Morgan Heath dished out 34 assists in three short sets. Junior
Kyrsten Stanford had four total blocks.
Defensively,
Jordan Gibson and
Caitlin Klotzbach each totaled 17 digs. The Valiants hit .119 for the match, while the Lions were at .250 (.385 in the second set).
Kills from Stanford and Mantz helped break open a 3-2 game one scoreline, as the Lions ran off five unanswered points. The pair added kills at the end to close out the set.
The final game was tied 17-17 when two Mantz kills forced a Manhattanville timeout. Mantz then added another spike for a 21-18 lead.
The Lions followed with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-5) win over King's.
Mantz had nine kills and hit .261, while Stanford totaled six kills and a .357 attack percentage.
Heath had 19 assists and nine digs, while
Brandy Blimline added six kills, three aces and three blocks.
Greth ran off four straight service aces in the third game, adding two more in the same run before King's could finally break serve- trailing 14-1. Blimline then had two consecutive aces as the Lions stretched their lead to a remarkable 21-2.
Albright would claim nine service aces in that third set, with Greth's nine total aces falling two short of the school match record.
The Lions improve to 8-10 on the year, and have swept all three of their tri-matches so far this season (with two of those days featuring a win over King's).
