Despite 13 saves from
Marguerite DeLucas, the Albright College field hockey team lost its season opener, 1-0 to Kean on Friday night.
The game was held at Susquehanna as part of the Connie Harcum Classic. The Lions will now face the hosts at noon in tomorrow's consolation game.
Freshman
Morgan Raneiri had the game's first shot on goal, forcing a save from
Katie DiCarlo five minutes in.
The Cougars had several early shot attempts blocked, but recorded their first real threat in the 20th minute of action. DeLucas saved
Laura Cheatham and then stopped
Jordan Colna as the Kean player attempted to force in the rebound.
DeLucas stayed active early in the second half, stopping
Claire Keenan and
Marissa Robinson early in the period. With 24 minutes to play DeLucas stoned
Stephanie Soares, with the rebound going wide of the cage.
The Cougars took the lead with 15:40 left to play, as Cheatham fed Robinson to finally sneak one past DeLucas.
The Lions earned a penalty corner right off the restart, but nothing came from
Mackenzie Faight's service. DeLucas made four saves in a 33-second span late in the game, but the Lions couldn't find the net at the other end.
DeLucas stopped 13 of the 14 shots she faced for Albright, while Raneiri and
Amanda Smith had shots on goal.
