Box Score
Following yesterday's season-opening defeat, the Albright College women's soccer team fell once again today by a score of 2-1 to Penn State Berks.
Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities to open up the first half, but couldn't capitalize. Junior
Erin Hand nearly scored on a headball that would have given the Lions an early lead.
With thirteen minutes left in the half, freshman
Dylan Shipe made a strong stop on a Penn State Berks breakaway to keep the game tied. After several missed chances off of corner kicks, PSU Berks'
Cristen French scored over the outstretched arms of sophomore goalkeeper
Kelly Burian to put Albright down 1-0.
Penn State Berks' momentum carried into the second half, as
Simone Stewart netted a lob shot off of a solid pass from
Dana Sarcinello to make the score 2-0.
With just under ten minutes left in the game, senior
Mel Sullivan sent a header just wide of the net off of a
Jena Muller free kick.
Just minutes later, the seniors, Sullivan and Muller, got redemption. Off of another Muller free kick and an assist by freshman
Emily Sousa, Sullivan scored her first goal of the season to make the score 2-1.
In the last five minutes of the game, sophomore goalkeeper
Alexis Lorusso made several stellar plays to hold PSU Berks' one goal lead. The Lions' final attempt at tying the game came with a minute and thirty seconds left but Sousa's shot went wide of the net, giving PSU Berks the victory.
With today's loss, the Albright College women's soccer team falls to 0-2 on the season. The next chance for their first victory comes September 4, when the team travels to play Immaculata University.
