READING,Pa. – A second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle to end the meet, propelled the Albright College men's swim team to a 104-101 victory Saturday afternoon in an emotional home opener at The Natatorium.
The day began with a ceremony to honor fallen teammate
Matthew Rein who tragically passed away in a fire in September. His initials MPR are embossed on the caps of both the men's and women's squads.
The Lions improved to 2-0 on the season, aided by
Rick Sutton who picked up three victories on the afternoon, with triumphs in the 1000 and 500 freestyle events, and as a member of the winning 400-medley relay team that included
Matt Runtas who raced to wins in the 100 and 50 Freestyle races, and
Ken Richardson who swam to wins in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley.
Alex Bauer was the other member of the team that won in 3:42.18.The squad of
Sean Yuschovitz, Trevor Endler,
Mitch Cain and
Drew Leahy came in third in a time of 3:58.0.
Isaac Thomas captured two events for the Warriors in its initial meet of the year.
The 400-freestyle relay team of
Parker Vivian, Leahy,
Tim Resch, and Cain were able to secure the meet with a second place showing in a time of 3:30.23, had Albright not picked up a point in the final event Lycoming would have stolen the win.
Sutton won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:52.61
Jayce Temperine touched in 11:10.67 for second place. In the 500 the senior claimed victory in 4:58.91 with Yuschovitz taking third in 5:14.71.
Runtas raced to the win in 22.43 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 50.58 seconds in the 100. Richardson took the crown in the breaststroke in 1:02.09. and the 200 IM in 2:04.45.
Bauer was second in the 100 butterfly in 54.41 and third in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.31.
The Lions are at Widener University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
